We recently had a visit from
Flat Stanley. He had come all the way from
Ft Thomas, Kentucky. I'm not sure how long Flat Stanley has been traveling for, but he is nearly ready to return home. Before he came to see us he was in
North Bay, Ontario and I have now sent him off to
Lazo, British Columbia. Unfortunately for Stanley, the weather was not very nice during his visit. It was cold and windy, not very fun for exploring. We tried to make the best of it.

First we took Stanley to see T-Rex at the
Milk River Visitor's Center. Stanley felt pretty tiny standing underneath that gigantic dinosaur.

After climbing on T-Rex, Stanley climbed around on the fake Hoodoos at the Visitor's Center. We would have liked to take Stanley down to
Writing On Stone Provincial Park, but as it has already been said, it was too cold and windy. If only Stanley had come for a visit in the summer, what fun we would have had hoping around from Hoodoo to Hoodoo. We would have taken him to see the ancient First Nations
petroglyphs (carvings) &
pictographs (paintings).

When we were done playing here we decided that we would show Stanley how our town got its name. Did you know that the
Milk River flows all the way to the Gulf of Mexico? And if you didn't already know, the Milk River gets its name because it always looks muddy or "milky" because of the sandy sediment.

After all this fun was had, it seemed like a good time to go wash our very muddy van at the local car wash. Everything is mostly dried up...for now, and the van was so dirty that it was completely the colour of dried mud. Stanley was such a great help, cheering me on along with the girls in the safety of the van. (we would hate for Stanley to get wet and fall to pieces).

We even tried to put Stanley to work delivering flyers with us...but the paper bag was a bit too big for him to carry, so he had to just ride along instead.
All in all, even though the weather was a bit chilly, I think that Stanley had a great time and he will return to Ft Thomas with stories of distant places to share with the children of the second grade class that sent him out on his adventures.
Wow! I'm not sure I will be able to live up to the adventures he has had with you. I lead a pretty boring life! Sounds like he had fun at your house :)
ReplyDeleteMandy I love flat Stanley. Maybe we should have a 'flat Garth and Jean' make rounds to everyone's homes before the next reunion!
ReplyDeleteOH. MY. WORD. That would be so much fun! I think we really should do that! We could have a family blog or face book group where everyone could record their adventures and post pictures of them with Flat Garth and Jean. I think it would be totally amazing!
ReplyDeleteBe sure to go to the planning meeting next week and suggest that K - it would be very fun!
ReplyDeleteI am not quite sure how it would be set up to work.
Hmmm ... thinking ...
It would likely have to be by date or some other sequence (or topic) as if they were actually at somebody's place on a specific day/time. But it is so much fun to actually get a 'flat Stanley' in the mail to carry around and prop up for pictures too. Maybe each family could have a 'flat Garth' and a 'flat Jean' sent to them electronically to print out or to digitally insert. I could then take Jean out to the garden and show her my peas or pansies or in the winter take Garth to the skating rink (he loves to skate) - If there are enough families we each might only get 2 or 3 days.
Maybe we could have a calendar and each family could sign up for [up to 4?] special days (in any season we choose) and it would be OK if more than one family wanted the same day as long as all the days got covered. If we started right away there could be a whole year of stuff to be printed into a book before reunion time. We could each have it electronically or in hard copy and give it to Dad and Mom - at the reunion - would you happen to be able to get a 'flat Stanley' book and make sure they know who flat Stanley is?
My brain is whirring ... bet you can tell huh! your enthusiasm made it kick into gear.
And really it could be set up to work however it plays out ... whoever volunteers to 'host' it and do the work would have to have the say about parameters
ReplyDeleteI'll be sure to suggest it to my dad. And I would love to be the one to get it started and think up the rules and stuff. Just think of all the fun things that Flat Garth and Jean will do over the next year!!!!
